single female conure laying eggs?

Question
Hello,
I have a 12 year old female sun conure who has recently began laying eggs, is this a normal thing for them to do? And is it possible to just get a stud for my female or are they life time mates? I also wonder what to do with the eggs as I know that they are not fertile but she is very protective of them and i really feel sorry for her spending all her days sitting on these eggs that will never hatch. What should I do?????

Answer
This is normal behavior, I would not recommend getting her a male, just let her do her thing. There is no such thing as a stud for a parrot. Birds mate for life and you are her mate. The eggs she is laying is just in response to stimulation of breeding season. She might of had more light or something that triggered the nesting behaviors.
You can buy her fake eggs so she sits on them. Eventually she will leave them, if you take them away she will lay more.

Give her some more calcium rich foods. I would make her some bird bread and give her hard boiled egg.
Here is my site on avian nutrition and I will also give you my link to the Birdie Cookbook page:

You are going to want to watch her closely. She may lay an egg every other day or so and you will want to watch her abdomen to see if she is looking bloated or puffed up, if she begins to look that way you will need to get her to the vet immediately.
However, with the proper diet, this should not happen.
She may lay eggs during breeding season, you may want to reduce the amount of light that she gets. If she gets light such as in the wild, winter time there is less sun light than in the spring, this may discourage her from laying eggs.
Good luck!
