Question
Carly,
I have a seven and a half year old cockatiel. Every year we put in a nesting box and she usually lays 7-10 eggs and will sit on them until we take the box out. The eggs have never been fetilised even though she has lived with two males in her lifetime, both she despised. She has never had problems passing eggs in the past even though she has refused anything other then seed her entire life. Iam worried about putting the nesting box back in the cage this year because of her age and the increased risks of problems. Is she too old? Thanks, Joanna.

Answer
Dear Joanna,
This is a very good question and I will be happy to answer it! Your Cockatiel is getting old and at this age laying eggs can harm her. Your Cockatiel is also losing calcium. If I were you, I would not put the nestbox in this year.(only for health reasons)

My Cockatiel only eats seeds too, but will sometimes eat her pellets. My Cockatiel LOVES cheese and pasta. Try feeding your Cockatiel those foods. My Cockatiel is only 5 months old and is like a baby! He eats anything!!! You can see a pic of my Cockatiel on my profile.
Good Luck!
Carly
