Umbrella Cockatoo Weaning Question

Question
I purchased an umbrella cockatoo ten days ago.  When we purchased him he was getting his feathers in and was being hand fed.  Now he is almost completely fully feathered.  The last thing coming in is his tail feathers.  When we purchased him he was between the ages of 6 wks and 10 wks.  When should I start weaning him from the baby formula?  He has begun interest in apples and some veggies.  I've helped hand raise babies up until it was time to wean but I'm kind of clueless at this point.  The lady who sold him to us told us he would let us know when he's ready.... ?

Answer
Hi, Stephanie.  Thanks for posting.

You can start the weaning process when your too begins nibbling on other types of healthy food.  Sounds like he might be at that point now.  You can start the process and if he doesn't do well enough, i.e., isn't getting nourished enough, then you can stop weaning, go back to handfeeding, then start weaning again later.  There are no set times for the weaning process to occur...it should happen at the baby too's pace.

Do you know how to wean a baby parrot?  If not, let me know and I can help or you can visit my website for information:
