Bread and Water

Question
Hi,
I have an orange winged parrot. Besides the usual seeds and fruits i feed him bread soaked in water with sugar sprinkled on top every morning and evening. For more than a year or so he had no problem eating it but recently i noticed him throwing up some of the bread after a couple hours of feeding. Is this diet unhealthy for him? Do they normally have a problem digesting the bread or not to worry?
Thanks for your time

Answer
There is virtually nutritional value to the bread or sugar you're feeding so the potential for the bird having malnutrition is increased when they fill up on what amounts to 'nothing' and don't have room for the good stuff.
I'm very happy you asked about this because it means you really care.
The seeds are also not recommended for caged birds - but a pelleted diet (any kind) is preferable. You see, they don't get nearly as much exercise by flying around and foraging when they're in captivity, so the seeds, high in fat, lead to things like fatty liver disease and sometimes worse.  When this happens it can cost hundreds or even into the thousands of dollars to treat the bird (and there's no guarentee it will survive).

Now and then a bit of whole grain bread is a nice treat, but sugar should be naturally gleaned from the fruits they eat. Adding sugar can make their crop ripe for yeast/fungal infections, another quite costly condition that could be life threatening.
