Question
Hello, I have just taken in two splayed legged 7 week odl lutino lovebirds...there great and there legs arent very bad they get around very well and perch normaly... I also have a 1 year old male normal peachfeaced lovebird. The lutinos are caged seperately at this time. I feed my peachfaced bird 'Merlin' Zupreem natural cockatiel/small parrot pellets with some fresh veggies/fruit everyday, the twins as I call them 'Selen & Sienna' are still being handfed once daily they are eatting very well on there own also they are eatting mianly a sunflowerless cockatiel typed seed and some Zupreem pellets...which they arent seeming to like very much and will not try fresh foods I was wondering what the best diet for these little african birds could be...pellets or seeds? I know if the little ones dont start eatting pellets more soon they will come to only eat seeds I was wondering if I should experiament with some different brands of pellets/colored pellets and different shaped pellets? should they be eatting soley pellets or seeds and pellets? I'm not sure I know pellets are supposed to be all the better but I was thining they need some seeds via what they eat in the wild I'm a bit confused over this. Also would you know what age lovebirds are supposed to be fully weaned at? I've bought a 5 to 5 1/2 week old baby from the breeder I got my lutinos from and am handfeeding him as well they said another two weeks should be enough....I have lots of experiance with handfeeding baby birds this is why I wasnt worried about taking the birds bfore they were fully weaned(I've handfed about ten budgies in the past and several were just hatched)

Answer
Hello again Tara.
Here is a site that'll help to answer questions about your birds' diets.
Please do be aware, an all seed diet is not good for your birds.  Seeds do contain a lot of fat, which is hard on a bird's  liver and kidneys, not to mention an obesity problem that could result.
Most pellets on the market do have chemicals in them that could be harmful to your bird.

Continue to offer your babies fresh fruits and vegetables every day.  Eventually they will get curious enough that they'll try the new foods.
