Sneezing

Question
Since we brought our parrot home, (a double yellow head amazon) I notice him sneezing mostly in the morning and only some times.
It this an allergic condition?

I grew up with parrots roaming free as they pleased at home (in Latin America) and I dont remember this on any of those.

I am asking out of curiosity, since the bird is been with us for more than 7 years and is pretty healthy.

thanks

Angelica

Answer
Hi Angelica,

I dont think you have a thing to worry about with the sneezing. Almost all of my birds will sneeze at times. I usually notice it more in the winter when we have the heat on and the air is dry. As long as you are not seeing any nasal discharge or hearing any wheezing noises, I would consider this just a normal behavior. As a funny side note, my macaw, Polo, makes himself sneeze a lot. He will put one of his toenails in his nostril which if course makes him sneeze. Then he laughs.

Good luck with your bird. I think Double Yellow Heads are such incredible birds. How lucky you are to have been able to see them flying free as you grew up. That is something I could only dream of being able to do even once in my life.
