lovebird temperments......

Question
Hello Sarah, my question concerns my wanting to house a lovebird with a budgie. I have a rather large normal female budgie shes NOT an english keet, i've had other keets in with her before but she plays rather roughly with them to the point where i've lost to keets to her roughness. I've been doing research on lovebirds, out of the 3 species being the peach-faced, masked, and fischers i read that the fischers is the least aggressive out of the 3 species is that correct? Thier a bit smaller and more docile with that being said was wondering how the two would get along? Under normal circumstances i read you shouldn't place a keet and lovebird in the same cage but this isn't a normal circumstance the keet is large for her size and is in a 18x18x36 inch cage would that be enough room for the two birds so they don't fight? I do have a smaller cage and was planning on seperating the two initially until they got used to one another. I don't want to get a cockatiel because thats two large a bird for my tastes, and a canary wouldn't work out because i read you shouldn't mix hookbills with hardbills and another keet would ultimately spell disaster all over again. So that leaves me with the lovebird as the only choice for a second bird. Any information you can give me i would appreicate on the fischers lovebird thier temeperment opposed to the 2 other species being masked and peach-faced. I have a breeder waiting in the wings pardon the pun on my decision and what i want to do.....

Thanks, Tom Email again is: Tomtalker2000@yahoo.com

Answer
Hello Tom,

Under NO circumstances should you house a lovebird and a budgie together. It doesn't matter if your budgie is larger than normal and quite aggressive, you're taking a huge risk for both birds. If your budgie has killed other budgies in the past, what makes you think she isn't capable of killing a lovebird?

Lovebirds don't normally take well to other species of birds and if worse comes to worst, they will fight, and likely to the death. Its a huge risk that you would be taking and I would highly recommend you keep them in seperate cages for their entire life with you. If you want to let them out during playtime to get to know each other that is perfectly fine, but leaving them unsupervised together in the same cage would be disastrous.

I urge you to go out and get another cage for your lovebird if you really want to have 2 birds and keep the budgie and lovebird seperated unless supervised!!! I wouldn't risk either of their lives.

Its the right thing to do.

I hope thats helped!

Sarah
