ringneck parrot or cockatoo?

21 16:18:14

Question
For my 16th birthday my family gave me a bird from one of our friends(he is a breeder) and they said I had the choice of getting a ringneck parrot or a cockatoo. I have researched them both and they both seem very sweet! What should I do?

Answer
Though parrots require a lot more attention than anyone imagines, a ringneck will tolerate being left alone (while you're at school, etc) much better than a 'too.

Cockatoos need nearly constant attention and most importantly, touching, holding and challenges for their high intelligence.  Imagine having a toddler. For 50+ years.  That's a 'too.
If these needs aren't met, they are very likely to developing plucking problems and once this happens it's nearly impossible to stop. They might also become biters and that's never any fun.

Are you ready to have a companion who will need your daily attention until you reach your 60's ? A parrot cannot be left in a cage or on their own for a couple days while you go about your life. They will have to come first when it comes to dates, travel, and even life style.

You have to get rid of ALL the teflon products in your home.  No scented candles, or plug ins and never, ever a room spray.  Even the way you clean your carpets has to be careful since many products that repel stains have teflon in them.  Teflon is very deadly to a bird.

No pesticides in the home either.  Even perfumes are advised against.

'Toos are very, very dusty. Vacuuming must be done every day, not just for your own health, but for the bird's.
