Question
hi, i have a budgie approx.year old
i just noticed today that shes been nodding her head a lot. not just her head, her whole upper body. its like one of those cockatiels and bob their head with the music? well its like that except more rapidly and shes doing it every 5 seconds. is this a behavior problem or a medical one? she has a blood feather, if it matters. its not bleeding, but its there. her poops looking fine, altho about a week before, just for one day, her waste was all liquid. she started molting, also. it looks like she has the hiccups. whats wrong with her?

Answer
Dear Susan,
thank you for your question.
It's a bit hard to say without having seen the behaviour, but I can think of two things. Budgies bob their head a lot when they are courting each other, but it's more something that males do and it's usually accompanied by "singing" and chattering. The other thing is a crop infection, the bird may try to regurgitate food. Please see an avian vet with her to rule out any medical problems. These websites list avian vets:
www.birdsnways.com/birds/vets.htm
www.parrotparrot.com/avianvets/
http://aav.org/vet-lookup/

Mirrors and plastic birds are toys that can lead to a crop infection because the bird tries to feed the other bird it sees and is bringing up food constantly. With another live bird, the food would be eaten and the birds would stop feeding each other after some time.
I hope I was of some help to you
