Question
QUESTION: "hello
i have a baby indian ringneck parrot
when it was 2 weeks its parents stop to feeding it and after that i took the baby to handfeeding
it was at bad condition, stand in one feet the other feet hasnt enough power, lithargy, cant stand it head up.
with handfeeding (keytee formula and multi vitamins)the baby goes good and looks healthy, climping at cage many hours in a day.
now it is 8 week and is at weaning state, eat itself (prefer peanuts, fruit and seeds,no so much pellets)but in small quantities. it refuse the handfeeding except at night when i handfeeding it 2 times ( totally 15-20 cc kaytee formula). From yesterday appear the same signs like before, stand in one foot, the other foot hasnt enough power and trembling and doesnt climb to it cage. i am very afraid about that and i dont know what can i do.
I cant find any veterinarian specialist for birds here in greece.Thank you very much for your time and help

ANSWER: Hello, and thanks for trying so hard to help this baby bird. I do hope you continue to look for an avian veterinary specialist in your area. Even healthy birds should be seen by one at least once a year.Even though you feel it is at weaning stage I would not stop hand feeding if he is not taking in enough nutrition and fluids. One problem may be that hand feeding formula already has the correct amount of nutrients, and suppliments may be adding too much of the nutrients he is already getting in the formula. Things like fungal infections and bactirial infections may be playing a large role in this situation. The parents may have rejected him for just this reason, that he was not well. Sometimes the will only put parenting energy into healthy chicks rather than "waste" precious energy on ones that would not servive. When you do wean him, make sure you have lots of good vegitables and pellets for him to become used to rather than seeds, which should only be fed as a treat once in a while.  My best to your little one.   Christy

QUESTION: hello
thank you very much for your responce, support and help
i'm very appreciated about that
before my babies weaning stage, i used to handfeeding him with syring 4 - 5 times per day, totally about 40 cc food in a day (KAYTEE formula 13cc,water and fruit juice 27 cc).
At the weaning i handfeeding him 2 times per day, 15cc per day, but the problem appear.
Now from yesterday,i'll try to handfeeding him 5 times/day,totally 30+ cc (KAYTEE handfeeding and KAYTEE weaning with water and juice)
My baby now is about 8 weeks old
do you believe that 30cc is ok for him?

ANSWER: Hello, I'm glad to hear he is eating and would first say to feed slowly until the baby is comfortably full and his crop is not overly full.I would not think water and juice is the best choice for weaning. If he is not ready to wean, because he is weak then you should probably continue to hand feed formula until he can feed by himself totally. You may simply need to hand feed him longer than other babies normally would. Offering formula several times a day.I hope that this helps you. But if not, Please ask about anything else and I will certainly try to help you. My best wishes, Christy

QUESTION: hi cristy
my mistake i think was that allow the baby to weaning too early, because he wasn't enough strong for that.
Now i have leave only water, some pellets and a millet branch in the cage , remove the other foods to ensure the handfeeding, because when he has many tastefully foods ( fruits, seeds, boiled rice...)doesnt like the handfeeding formula. but my problem is that the baby dont eat enough food. When i handfeeding him with syringe, he accept only 2-3cc,maybe in the night max 10cc, and so i handfeeding him with power feeding with syringe, unfortunately when he take more than 5-6 cc many times he vomiting the food. do yow know why? After this i and my wife handfeeding the baby with 3-5 cc many times in a day ( about 7 times).
I must give him many cc of food in a day to going stronger but i cant and i dont know what i can do for this.
thanks chris for your help, this is very useful for me
ANSWER: Hello Nicholas, I believe he will need many small feedings each day maybe two to four hours apart so leave food in the cage with a shallow bowl of water but still give frequent feedings he may not be hungry each time and thats OK.If a pet store has some antibiotics you may want to try a very small amount of those too. Keep in touch, Christy

QUESTION: hello Cristy
yesterday the baby take 6 handfeedings, totally 43 cc.only the first time he is vomiting, maybe i gave him the food quickly?
it looks healthy, has good behavior and is very sweet,i don't think he is ill,the only problem is that he doesn't take enough food to be strong and to learn to eat himself.

Answer
Nicholas, Yes you could be giving it to him too quickly and don't let his crop(the sack under theright side off his chest) be too full. Just a couple drops at a time if that is all he can take, don't rush.If you feed to much or to fast the food could get in his lungs and cause an infection and kill him.Slow and steady OK! Best of luck to you and your baby, Christy
