My 14 yr old Grey laid an egg

Question
We found an egg in our African Greys cage this morning. A friend has Sammis sister laid eggs in may, and is now laying one a month :0  She suggested we take the egg away, whch she said the vet told her to do. We did and she has been fine all day. I am concerned  if she lays more eggs. She regularly eats cheese fruits and veggies, and has a cuttle bone in her cage she gnaws on occasionally. We recently brought in a parakeet, that we found in our yard,a male. Could that have triggered the egg? Do I give her more sunlight or more sleep? So many different opinions! HElp!

Answer
Changing the light cycle does help, but don't take the eggs away if she's laying eggs every day or more than 2 each week! The more eggs she lays, the more prone she is to calcium deficiency. The male parakeet COULD have triggered it, but probably not. It was most likely just her time to start. Become familiar with the symptoms of egg-binding and have your vet's phone number handy in case she ever becomes egg-bound as this is very serious and can be deadly. You may also want to switch her to the Roudybush food made for egg-laying birds as it contains extra calcium and nutrients she'll need to be healthy.
Everything should work out for you as long as you are prepared for the health issues.
