Conure potty training.

Question
I have a green-cheek conure that I've had since it was a baby.  He's about 1 year old and is very well tempered.  The only problem that I'm having with him is the potty training issue.  I have been able to get him to poop on command, but not to go to his cage and do it himself.  If you don't give him the command when it's his time, he'll just go where ever he's standing.
I'm wondering if you know of a technique that I can use to get him to fly to his cage and go when he has to without me telling him.
Any suggestions you could give would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Wesley

Answer
Hi, Wesley.  Thanks for posting!

I think what you might have done wrong during training is NOT teaching your conure to go on command only when he's on his cage.  I think this is what you'll need to retrain him to do.  In other words, only give him the GO command when he's on his cage.  To teach this, you'll need to move the conure to his cage when it's his time to go, then give the command for the bird to go.  Essentially, you need to retrain the bird to defecate only when he's on his cage and you give the command.  I don't know how you're going to do this unless you have lots of time available to catch the bird each time it's his time to go poo.  And then if the bird "misses," are you going to scold him for defecating?  A problem you might have is that the bird will become very confused...try to avoid this.

Birds go wherever because it's not natural for them to do otherwise.  I wish you luck with this difficult task.
