Cockatiel -- hurt foot and wing

Question
My cockatiel can't raise one of his wings fully. Last night, he started to have trouble putting weight on his foot. We have an appt for the vet next Wednesday, but we're worried. We are in the northern part of LA county but can't find an emergency pet that is closer than 45 minutes away.  What should we do?

Answer
Good for you for getting a vet appointment right away instead of seeing if it will go away on its own! Is the hurt foot on the same side as the injured wing? If this is the case, he might have had a stroke and lost some movement in the one side. Also, if there's something wrong with the one foot, he may not raise the one wing because it causes him to press harder on the hurt foot (to keep his balance). Look at the hurt foot. Is it swollen or pink/red at all? How about his nails? Are they longer than usual? Sometimes this will throw them off balance. Keep your vet appointment, but watch him closely. If you see ANY changes, go to the emergency vet. You can also call the vet and tell them the exact symptoms. If the vet is worried about it at all they will make an appointment for you right away. I hope he turns out ok!
