Question
Hello Carol,
Ok i have got a problem or an up-coming one.
Yesterday i bought a 6 month old male yellow fronted kakariki.
Hes very nervous and scared, when i approach he flaps around a bit...
Hes is very active though.
My question is how do i get him to accept i will not hurt him and for us to be friends? I have herd that they are faciating pets to have when tame.
Wing-clipping is not alloud over here in the UK,the vets said its cruelty.
So without wing-clipping how can we tame this beautiful little parrot?
Please try your best in answering as i would like as much detail as possible.
Thankyou very much,
Jordan

Answer
I am sure that wing-clipping is NOT illegal in the UK and whoever told you that is mistaken. The vet around you may not do it (and may tell you that it is illegal just so you wont) but it really is YOUR choice. There are instructions to do it yourself on http://www.cockatootrainer.com/nailsandwings/ and it is NOT hard to do. I STRONGLY urge you to clip the wings. It does NOT hurt the bird, and will prevent the bird from being able to escape. When birds escape, most of them die because they are not used to the climate, or they get eaten by a neighbor's cat, etc. If you do decide not to clip the wings, I would purchase a flight suit to make sure the bird does not fly away. Also, you'll then need to bird-proof your home. No ceiling fans allowed!
Kakarikis are usually VERY trusting birds and are much like a quaker parakeet. They're very bold and will NOT back down (they'll even fight dogs!).
They do need a VERY large cage because they are so athletic.
As for teaching him to trust you, what exactly does he do that makes you believe he is afraid of you? His body language (which you will learn in time) will say a LOT about how he needs to be treated. For instance, if I gave you instructions to tame a bird that bites because it's afraid and your bird does not bite, the instructions obviously will not work and can actually make your relationship with him worse. You say he flaps around when you approach him. Have you tried asking him to step up? Some birds just are funny that way. I have a conure who acts just terrified when you walk into the room, but the moment your hand goes in the cage, he steps right up and tells you what a pretty bird you are.
Kakarikis are one of my favorite birds! I have an aunt in the UK who has 14 of them and they are just the most fun little guys you'll ever meet!
