Blue Front Amazon Feather Loss

Question
I have a blue front amazon that is about 9 years old.  She was hand fed and we received her as a baby, she lives in a large cage and we often leave the cage open when we are nearby.  The past 2 days I notice that the feathers near the top of her feet look like they might have been plucked and she has had a few larger feathers fall out since yesterday.  It looks like she had fun shredding the few I found on the cage bottom.

My bird is eating fine, same as always, very playful, singing and acting like she usually does.  Her diet is mostly seed/pellets with a small amount of table food.

I'm concerned about this feather loss, any ideas what is going on?  I can bring her to our avian vet, but with the extreme cold temps outside I'd rather avoid taking her out.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
I understand not wanting to take her out in the cold, it's -30F where I am right now! She may be plucking, but you can sometimes stop this behavior by giving her foraging and preening toys. Phone books, old feathers, newspaper, cotton fiber rope, coffee filters, and coconut fiber toys all help reduce the urge to pluck. You may want to make a vet appointment for when it's a little warmer just to make sure she's not sick, but I think that a preening toy may be helpful.
Also, this is the time of year when some parrots moult, so as long as you don't notice any "fuzzy" or bald spots, she's most likely fine.
Good luck and stay warm!
