Question
I have a 5 week old cockateil that escaped out of his cage only to take a long flight into our window. He was flaling about on the floor.  I picked him up and cuddled him against my chest. He has had brief periods of chirping and standing then becomes tired and sleeps.  I am keeping him away from his parents as he cannot stand in the cage.  He is supported by a soft sweater in which he lays or rests his neckhead to sleep.  I am trying to feed him but don't know if I am successful. How do you get his beak open to feed?  This is my first set of babies. He survived his 1st night and seems to be up more and more. Any help would be appreciated as I am worried sick about this little one.  I live in a small city and there is no bird doctor.

Answer
Ok well he's just about at the age where he would be weaned, so try feeding him from a spoon instead of a syringe. Leave weaning pellets in his food bowl at all times and make sure his water bowl is always full. The food/water bowls should be near the bottom of the cage so that he can reach them without perching. Weaning pellets may be hard to come by in a small city, but you can make your own by soaking some pellets in a little bit of juice. Change the food every few hours to make sure it doesn't get moldy. Soak some of the pellets in juice or water until they are very soft and then mix them with some warm (not hot! between 105 and 107 degrees F) applesauce or other baby food. Feed him with a SPOON until he's full (stops eating). Feed him in the morning and at night (12 hours apart) and keep very close track of his weight with a gram scale. He may lose a little bit of weight just due to being older and more active, but it shouldn't be very much! Here's a website with some details about the weight of the bird at different ages: www.cockatootrainer.com/handfeed/
