New conure

Question
I have aquired a Nanday Conure. I am absolutely in love with him but I have never owned a bird before! He is very quiet and doesnt scream in the morning, thank god! But I have a few questions.
1. Is there any way to get a guesstimate on how old he may be? He acts like the snotty teenage conures we have at work. but i dont know!
2. Is there any tips/tricks to dealing with the pooping on you/furniture?
3. I have been trying to get him to learn "step up" but he legit does nothing more than move over when i press my finger into his belly and tell him to step up. i have to grab him from the cage, and while he doesnt bite, he squawks and obviously doesnt like it.
Any information would be great!
thanks!,

Answer
-- Birds under a year old have large black pupils and tend to be a bit clumsy, very curious and when looked at directly and interacted with they fluff and assume a 'babyish' position

Young birds are so adorable you can't miss it.

After a year their eyes are normal color, they're more confident, less clumsy and until old age you won't ever really be able to know how old a bird is.  Even the best vets will 'guesstimate'

As for the rest of what you're about to encounter as a birdy parent, look here and do it right from the very start   http://www.4AnimalCare.org/birds
