Question
I just got a lovely 8 month old Sun Conure, last week. I am having a very hard time with having it to like me. It is some what nice to me, once I get her out of her cage. But it takes like an hour to get her out! With lots of bitting. It bits pretty hard. Every time I am in the room I try to get her out she is pretty quite but, then when I giveup and leave the room it starts screaming agian! What do I do?

thank you for your time. =]

Answer
It does take time for the bird to get used to her new home, so give her time to adjust. Personally, I don't take my birds out of their cages unless it is an emergency. I like to give them the feeling of safety in their cage-they know that I wont bother them if they are in the cage. Instead, open the cage door and sit on the floor or next to the cage with some treats and toys. Play with the toys and pretend to eat the treats. She will get curious and come out to see what you're doing. When she comes out, offer her a treat. If she takes it, invite her to step onto your lap where the toys are. If she doesn't take it, go back to ignoring her and playing with the toys and "eating" the treats. Parrots are like small children-if you have it, they want it and they want ALL of the attention. Once she is playing with the toys, pet her a little. If she bites, say "no biting" and take away the toys and turn around. She'll most likely follow you to get the toys again, but she'll make the connection between the temporary loss of toys and the biting, so she will be less likely to do it again.
When she screams, say "I'm still here" and nothing more. Let her scream for hours if she wants but DO NOT talk to her, look at her, or come in the room. Once she has been quiet for a short amount of time (5 min to start with), come in the room and praise her and give her treats and maybe a small toy. She'll learn soon that screaming is NOT how to get attention.
Let me know if you need any more help with her and good luck!
