Conure beak issue

Question
Hi, I have sun conure, Rex, who is about two years old. He's in great form, full of his usual devilment, bright eyed, great feather, loving, etc. Recently, I have noticed a little 'hole' at the top of his beak between his two nares. It is as though he has lost one layer of the beak material. The hole is slightly bigger in diameter then the nare holes. I have touched it and the surface is the same hardness as the rest of his beak, but has a pinkish colour in contrast to the black. My other conure (nanday), Baby, shows no signs of any beak problems. They are 'best friends' and share an aviary space at night with my bare eye and GSC cockatoos (all hand tame and friendly). Sorry for any typos but both Baby and Rex are crawling all over my laptop!! Thanks for your help. Paulette

Answer
Hi, Paulette,

I found your post in the question pool this morning.  Whomever you originally sent your question to could not answer for some reason.

Is it possible one of the other birds, particularly the Toos, got a bit rough with Rex and bit him in this area of the beak?  Or could Rex have injured himself somehow during play on a toy or something in the home?  It's not normal, but I don't know from your post whether the bird needs to be seen by an avian vet.  Does this area bleed, have a scab, or seem to be a problem with breathing, etc.?

If there doesn't seem to be any health issue here for the bird (i.e., the bird isn't sick), then I'd say just watch for signs of aggressiveness between the birds.  Suns and Nandays are much smaller than the Toos so you may want to reconsider keeping them all together at night just in case, particularly if you are moving the conures to an enclosure normally housed by the Toos.  Birds get very territorial of their cage space.  Then again, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime situation.  If you are still doubtful, seek the advice of a certified avian vet.
