Question
Susie was given to me last June, she had lived with this lady for 22 years. She has bonded with me to the point where I think she thinks I'm her mate. Anyway she started laying eggs about 1 every two weeks and she seems to be obsessed with her egg she sit on it constantly, she won't even get off it to eat unless I force her. I'm afraid for her health. What can I do to get her to stop laying these eggs? Her previous owner said she never laid an egg before

Answer
Hello Teresa.  Thank you for posting.
It sounds like your Amazon is very happy and the conditions are right for her to lay eggs.
First of all, let her sit on her eggs.  When she gets hungry enough, she will leave them alone to eat.
When she has filled her "Mothering Instincts", she will quit sitting on the eggs (I am assuming that there is no male involved), but her natural "Mothering Instincts" need to be fulfilled first.  If you take the eggs away before SHE is ready, she will continue to lay more.
You can also cut back on the light she gets.  Having the cage covered for a few extra hours a day won't hurt her at all.  This will help trick her body into thinking that it's still night time and this is time for sleep.

A wellness check from a Certified Avian or Exotic Animal Vet also wouldn't hurt.

Good luck and God Bless.
