Question
Today I bought a female for my male black-masked lovebird. The female is a peach face. After a while in the cage together, i noticed that they were fighting. I want to know if its normal, if it will stop, and if they make a good couple. And if they mate what mutations can come out?

Answer
Hi, Jorge,

Their fighting is perfectly normal for 2 birds that don't know each other.  Just because we put 2 birds together doesn't mean they will get along...it's a chance we take with parrots...there are no guarantees.  Also, you should always quarantine a new bird for at least 30 days from existing birds in case the new bird has an illness...you don't want any illness to spread to your existing bird.  You need to house them in separate cages sitting next to each other until they get used to each other.  Gradually let them out together and see how they do together letting them sleep in their individual cages.  Once they start getting along together outside the cage, then you can try putting them in the same cage together.  The fighting may stop, but then again, these 2 birds may never get along with each other...that's just the way it is!

Coloration (phenotype) in offspring depends not only on the coloration of the parents, but the parents' parents.  Therefore, I don't know what possible mutations can result since I don't know the coloration of the adults parents.
