Question
I had rescued a feeder mouse and she got out of the cage and had a horrible accident with a picture frame and has passed away. I was going to clean out her cage and I have just noticed that there are 7 babies in there. They are not in a nest but they are all still breathing and squirming around. I'm panicing because I don't know what to do....please help I would love to be able to save them. I was googling and I saw on a site that I could feed them pedialite. There are no pet stores close by. What do you suggest?

Answer
I'm sorry to say the chances of them surviving are very slim. The best thing for them would be a nursing mother or a mouse who has had babies in the past. However since there are no pet stores close by you could try to raise them yourself. Keep them warm preferably with a heat pad and feed them at least every few hours using a small plastic pet syringe or pipette. I don't know what 'pedialite'is but if you have read it is suitable for small animals it should be OK especially if it is like puppy/kitten formula. You know when they are full as you can see the milk in their tummies.

It is best if you don't clean the cage as it will still smell of their mother. If they aren't already in a nest construct one of something soft such as toilet roll. Make sure they are in the dark and there are no drafts.

Please don't blame yourself if they die, it is rare for babies to survive without their mother.

Please feel free to ask any more questions. Good luck.
