mouse - rescued from cat

Question
Hi, I saw my neighbours cat in a high state of excitement early this afternoon and saw that she was playing with a mouse, the mouse was frozen looking at the cat, so I picked it up to get it out of harms way.  I guess the cat had been at it for quite some time and the mouse was shivering and teeth chattering - not sure if this is with fright or with cold too, it's very cold here at mo -1.  I kept it in my hand for a while to try and warm it up and calm it down, and at moment it's in a box with some shredded tissue, a piece of cheese and some weetabix.  Apart from the shivering the mouse has no visible sign of damage, it's very small 2-3 inches excl tail and is a brown colour.  I read that they are nocturnal so i was going to release it tonight, but I am worried as it is so cold, I wasn't sure if the cat had disturbed its nest.  Please can you advise what i should do for best, i'm also worried about how should i give it water, i have moistened the weetabix with milk??  Any advice appreciated, thanks

Answer
I am sorry for the delay in answering, I have had difficulty accessing the internet the past few days.

I think it is a good idea to release it back in the wild if it looks healthy. Make sure you relsease it at least 2 miles away from your home as they can come back. 3 inches is a good size for a wild mouse which means it isn't a baby.

Mice usually die either from shock when caught by a cat or the bacteria in the cats mouth. If there are puncture wounds then it is a good idea to take it to the vet and have him put to sleep.

Releasing it a night is good because mice can see better. I'm sure he loved the milk and wheetabix.
