Pet rat Oliver changes behaviou

Question
My son has a pet rat Oliver who usually is very active affectionate and loves interacting with the entire family.  He loves being handled usually but over the last 2 two day he has been acting like he is in pain.  He squeals if we try to pick him up or move him and earlier he acted like his tail hurt and was going around in circles licking and holding his tail.  Any idea what is going on?  We are real concerned about him.THANK YOU

Dear Nicole,

He must go to the vet immediately. Because small rodents don't show their illness until they are very sick - due to being prey animals- when they do show it they are very very sick. Please get him an emergency vet appointment.
