Girl mice suddenly fighting

Question

The Angels
Hi!

I have three girl mice that have been housed together since birth.  They each have their own wheel and there are plenty of hidey-holes, food dishes, and water bottles.  Up until last week (they are approximately 6 months old now), they've always been good to each other- together playing all night and curling up for sleep during the day.  Suddenly they are fighting and I can't pinpoint why!  All three of them have suffered numerous bites to their bums and tails.  I had to separate them before someone was killed.  I bought them a brand new cage with all new accessories hoping that this would help.  I've also tried the vanilla extract on bums and chins, to no avail.  What should I do?  I hate to have to keep them separated- but they can't even play nice on neutral territory.  :(

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Jana,

I have to ask, just in case - you are positive that they really are females?  This sounds just like what frequently happens with male mice - they get along until a certain point and then start attacking each other, especially near the genitals.  It might be a good idea to go ahead and check, especially since younger mice can sometimes be tough to sex (pet stores are known to mess this up, heh):  http://www.thefunmouse.com/info/sexing.cfm

Unfortunately, this just happens sometimes, even in females (though it's somewhat rare).  It sounds like you have tried everything I would, so I'm not really sure what to tell you except to keep them separated because biting can get pretty serious.  They definitely have enough food and water?  Does it seem like one is bossing the others the most?  If it's just one, you may be able to remove her and the other two could live together in peace.  If not, you might just be stuck with three mouse cages.  :(  As long as they have you, they should be happy nonetheless!

They really are gorgeous, though, best of luck!
