Question
Hey. my guinea pig was pregnant for sure, very close to the birth i thought as i could feel movment in her belly for some time. she wasnt VERY large but rather big. last night the male guinea pig was mounting and trying to have sex with her which made her skweek a bit. i took her out and there was blood around her bum. this morning in their cage i found a dead baby which looked as it had had his belly ripped open =( with quite alot of blood and other little things around him which may have been the content of him, im not sure. i am really scared as im not sure if shes still got a baby inside of her as she is deffinintly not as big but still feels quite swollen however i dont think i can feel any movment. is it normall for a guinea pig to only have one baby and is it normall to have a miscarrige in this way.
thank you so much
Stina

Answer
Hello, sorry it took me so long to reply. I am having horrible internet problems in new orleans. it is normal for guinea pigs to have miscarriages. Breeding guinea pigs is not easy and can be hard to do. I always say that breeding a guinea pig should be left to people who have done massive research and have met guinea pig breeders as well. Losing a litter is very common and unless you are planning on showing your guinea pigs I don't think breeding them is a good idea. You can lose the litter or the mother during birth. I would certainly keep both of your piggies away from each other so they won't mate again. If you are not feeling any movement, the other babies may have died. I would seriously consider taking her to a vet to make sure she isn't pregnant and to make sure that if she is pregnant she can give birth to the babies or see if they can remove the babies from her if they are stillborn. The vet is the best thing to do right now. I am so sorry for your loss of the baby but by the way you described it, I think there are some complications going on that are serious and she needs to go to a vet.
