Question
My boys each have a guinea pig they are in separate cages but visit each other daily. I buy the pine wood chips because that is what the pet store told me to buy. But now I have the challenge of cleaning up the floor which is carpeted and I can't vacuum it because it gets stuck in the vacuum. I need another bedding is corn Cobb good for piggies or what about unscented cat litter? please help I will try anything and would be grateful for any suggestions.
Sincerely,
Picking up the Pieces, one at a time!

Answer
Hello Latrice,

Actually, none of those are really good, including the pine. Pine is suspected in causing a variety of breathing problems, corn cob bedding can cause choking, and corn cob bedding and cat litter can cause intestinal blockages. Paper beddings, such as CareFresh, is the bet choice. Aspen is another wood shaving bedding that is safe.  Some other choices, if you are looking for something more cost effective but don't mind a bit more cleaning, are hay and newspaper or cloth. A bale of hay can be bought at most feed stores for very low cost and depending on the amount of piggies you have, may last a very long time. Just line the cage with newspapers and cover with plenty of hay. Cleaning times will vary depending on cage size and number of piggies. Cloth can be washed in a washing machine and is therefore reusable. Fleece, towels, sheets (over something more absorbant, such as newspaper or towels), and vetbed are all good choices. Cleaning for cloth beddings is very frequent, daily or every other day cleaning is typically neccessary. Hay can be difficult to vaccum but can typically be swept up. You'll likely have the same problem with the aspen that you are with the pine. CareFresh should work well, but if you have alot of piggies, may be a bit expensive. Cloth is your best choice for ease of cleaning and cost, however, cleanings will be more frequent. I'm afraid there are no "perfect" beddings out there yet but I hope this has helped a bit in your search for a new bedding. I personally use CareFresh and love it, I have used all of the others that I mentioned and they work well, but CareFresh was best for me.
