Question
At pre-school monday morning we were surprised to find a new ginne pig in our cage, some assumed the recently brought ginnue pig had given birth over the weekend, although the new pig seemed quite big, about half the size as the maybe mum, we have differed opinions on new ginnue pig, my question is , are new born ginnue pigs born with hair ? and how big are they ? was this a gift from god or a gift from someone else ? thanks for your time, Shell .

Answer
Hello Shell,

Congratulations on the new piggy, however he got there! Piggy pups are born fully furred, eyes and ears open, running around, munching solid food. Baby piggies are usually 3 to 5 oz although large litters have smaller pups and single pup litters can have very large pups. If he's nursing, she's his mom, if not, he's a gift from someone acting in God's place (as every piggy really is a gift from God when you get right down to it). If he is nursing and she is his mom, keep a close eye on her until he is weaned as she will still be at risk for pregnancy toxemia until he stops nursing. If he's male, separate him at 3 weeks so Mom doesn't get pregnant again. If he's a she, she can stay with Mom her whole life. Extra vitamin C and calcium should be given to them. Vitamin C is best given via fruits and veggies (I'll send you a link to a good list of them) and alphalpha hay should take care of the calcium. Good luck with your new piggy, baby or not.
