New Piggy

Question
I have two guinea pigs.  One of which is 5 months old (on the 12th)her name is Winnie.  And the other which will be a month old tomorrow, Pikah.  Thanks to reading up on the site introducing them went very well they are caged together in a large cage with 4 levels.

My question is though Pikah is very shy, I only brought her home a few days ago but she is very shy still, she sits in the corner of the cage with a little cat toy mouse I got for the pigs.

She is a lot more vocal than Winnie however and the pigs play together well and chase eachother around both in and out of the cage.  But Pikah seems rather reluctant to explore the whole cage, I put her on the second to the top shelf the other night and she climbed in the bed there that night, I woke up in the morning and she was still sitting in that bed.  Is it possible that she is just adjusting, or that maybe this is her attitude?   If not could you name off some ways to help my new piggy get adjusted to the cage a little more?

Another concern I have is that they are still continuously sniffing eachother's butts.  Winnie does it more than Pikah but is this something to be concerned about? Or is it normal for piggies who've just met?  The only reason I ask is because I had a dream the other night that they had babies, the lady i got them from assured me Pikah was a girl and I've tried sexing her but I'm still unsure...SO heh the question: Is this constant butt-sniffing normal or should I be worried that Pikah is a boy?

Answer
Courtney,

Your girls are fine and they are girls. What they are doing is communicating with each other who is the leader of their group  of the two of them. It is normal and nothing to worry about. But if you still are feeling unsure if Pikah is a girl or boy here is a site that will help you tell for sure weather she is really a girl or a boy. But it sounds like a more it is just the normal routine of deciding who is the leader. Check out this site it'll clear everything up as to weather you have two girls or a girl and a boy. The site is http://guinealynx.com/sexing.html

As for Pikah's behavior to being reluctant to explore the cage this is also normal as she is still adjusting to the new place, it'll take her some time before she feels totally settled in and feels safe in her new surrounding. Provide her with lots of attention, and keep moving her around the cage, that'll help her get use to the new and adjust to it better and build a trust bond between the two of you.

I hope this helps,
  Take care now,
