A good idea to get a companion?

Question
Hello, I got my guinea pig last Friday and right now she is just getting over a URI. I can tell that she improving and her nose is less crusty. She is not shivering anymore, and she rarely sneezes anymore. I put a medication on her nose everyday, which does is obviously helping. Her perosnality is calm, snuggly, and she seems to be getting used to me, even though she does get kinda scared whenever I put my hands in the cage. She was caged with her siblings and she seemed to really have a nice bond with them from what I saw. I don't like that pet store anymore, though because the guinea pig that I got there was actually sick from when I got her, so I don't want to risk getting another sick one. I was going to go to a different pet store and get another female or male, sice I don't know if my guinea pig is male or female. So... here are my questions: Will my guinea pig get along with another one for sure? And how to I tell the gender of my guinea pig?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Theresa, there is no guarantee that your guinea pig will get along with another guinea pig if it is male or female, it depends on their personality. I would suggest waiting another week or two before adopting a second piggy just so you can get to know your guinea pig and its preferences. And sexing a guinea pig is fairly easy one way is to lay it down on its back slowly and press on its lower stomach not hard but enough so you can see something. If it is a male a penis will show. If it is a female you won't see anything but a "v" shape. the other way is to weigh your guinea pig males will weigh more than females. When and if you do adopt a second make sure the person helping you can sex it for you, all petstores are suppose to have their guinea pigs sexed but they do make mistakes.
Hope this helps!
Laura
P.S. hope your piggy feels better
