Undelivered guinea pigs

Question
I've raised guinea pigs off and on for several years now.  11 days ago my very pregnant female was ready to deliver -- she was larger than I've ever seen a mother pig before.  After a long and difficult labor (approx 3 hours), she delivered 7 babies -- 4 live, 3 dead.  I could see she still wasn't done - there were probably 2 more to go (huge litter!!).  But then she stopped.  After 5 hours we took her to the emergency vet -- 3 am Sunday morning.  She said that since she wasn't trying to deliver, she didn't think there were any more.

She was wrong, the 2 (or more) babies have continued to grow -- she's getting very large again, the undelivered babies are very active inside her, we can very clearly see and feel them move and kick.  Is there any chance she will deliver the rest of this litter?

Answer
Strange and unusual, but not impossible. Women have been known to have what they thought were twins but were actually two separately conceived babies two months apart. Since the vet did not xray the sow they have no proof that there isn't more. Obviously if you can feel movement then SOMETHING is in there.

The largest litter I've ever had was seven, all live and all raised. The norm is 2-4. Most recently I had a sow that delivered two dead babies. I cleaned her cage and put her back. Three days later I see one lonely little baby running around quite healthy. I know for sure it wasn't in there before. Mom raised her and she was just weaned about two weeks ago. So it is entirely possible for a partial birth to happen, then later deliver the remainder.

If she's eating okay and nursing the babies I would leave her alone. She will deliver the remainder of the litter when it's time. If you're unsure, you can certainly take her to your vet and ask for an xray to confirm. You already know how to feel movement so I doubt you're feeling just gas. There probably is more to come.

The largest litter I've seen was a Teddy belonging to a friend that delivered and raised TEN babies. With only two nipples that mom was really busy.
