Question
Hi,
i have a syrian hamster (black bear) and she just had babies about 3 or 4 days ago. Since then she is getting really fat in her underside belly.  Is this normal?  She has not been running on the wheel that much since most of her time is spent eating and sleeping.

thank you!

Answer
Hi Carrie,

Your hamster looks fatter around her stomach because that's where her milk is stored.  Once the babies are weaned (when they're 3 weeks old), your hamster will return to her normal size.  Also, she eats and sleeps so much because nursing and taking care of her babies takes a lot out of her, and she's tired.

Since the babies were just born, remove the wheel.  You don't want the babies getting hurt.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
