eye infection or injury

Question
Hi Karen,
My albino long haired hamster has one (red) eye that has become smaller than the other while he was in the care of another family for a week while we were on vacation. I can't tell if it's infected (no obvious pus or drainage) or injured, but it's definitely smaller. He seems to be acting normally so far as far as eating, socializing etc. but it just looks strange and different. What would you recommend? We were thinking of putting a warm, wet washcloth on his eye thinking that maybe that might help.

Thanks for any ideas or advice,
Raquel

Answer
Hi Raquel,

Sometimes a hamsters eye/s will kind of crust over. I would suggest using a Q-tip dipped in warm water and gently rub it over the eye (from top to corner of eye). Do not try and pull the eye open. Their eyelids are very delicate and can tear easily.

If this does not help, you may want to consult with a vet.
