Hand rearing baby dwarf hamsters

Question
Hi there. Our family cat broke into my son's hamster cage and unfortunately killed both the male and female.  We are now left with 4 baby hamsters who are about 5 days old. What must we feed them and how often? So far we have been feeding them tinned evaporated milk diluted with water and they are still alive after 3 days. Please help!

Answer
Hi. I'm sorry about your situation. Unfortunately, baby hamsters are difficult to take care of because they are so small and there are so many. You can buy kitten formula or goats milk for them. You may want to hand feed them this from a kitten bottle if they won't drink by themselves. Also you can soak a piece of bread in the special milk if they won't drink from the bottle. You should feed the babies milk every hour. After about 2 weeks they can start eating normal food and drink normal water.  You should keep them warm, give them a comfy bed with some socks to curl up in. One thing you should definitely NOT do is put another hamster in with them as she will most likely eat them. To get all this, I would say the best thing to do is go to a pet store and they will give you all the stuff you need. I hope everything works out for you. GOOD LUCK!

Regards,
Sam
