hamster non stop squeaking

Question
i bought a baby winter white (or siberian hamster) four days ago and noticed that when he's curling himself up to go to slepp he started squeaking, i thought it was because he was still scared and was getting used to the new surroundings. but after four days the squeaking has become even longer and sometimes louder but only as he's about to sleep. when he plays or runs around he's perfectly fine and quiet. he's also gotten used to climbing into my hand so i dont hope he's still afraid... but is this vocalization normal? he in distress or in some pain??? should i have a vet see him asap?

Answer
Some hamsters are more vocal than others.  I've had many who chatter and squeak when they sleep and I'm afraid I have no explanation for this - other than perhaps they're having a bad dream!  In my experience, if a hamster is afraid or traumatised they cry out when they are awake - the fact that your hamster is happy with you is an indication that he is not afraid.  When a hamster is in pain they tend to be quiet, and hunched and don't want to be touched, I've never come across one that cries.

As you've only had your hamster for four days I wouldn't worry about him at this point but carry on letting him get used to you.  Once he feels more relaxed the chattering might stop.

Sorry I can't be any more help.
