QuestionQUESTION: I have a 2 year old male (yes, I am sure he is male) syrian hamster. He has been
having a hard white discharge about the size of a small grain of rice,
accompanied by some liquid. It has only happened twice, directly after I clean
his cage. I don't know where it is coming from, but he is my sixth hamster and I
have never seen anything like it. I was wondering if you might know. Thank
you!
ANSWER: Hi Elizabeth
This type of discharge is something you'd associate with a female, but as you say, he is definitely male. Is he weeing as normal? Is this a different colour, or less frequent than usual? How is he behaving apart from this? Is he eating/drinking/pooing/playing normally?
I've not come across this before, but if you can let me have a few more details I might be able to shed some light on this.
Regards

QUESTION: He has some irritation in his eye and he scratches that side of his head, but
otherwise he is eating and sleeping and drinking normally. I think he is
peeing normally, but becuase it goes into the bedding I don't really know. I
don't know if the discharge is coming out of his mouth or when he goes to
the potty or what. Overnight, the discharge shriveled up and the liquid with it
dried as well, almost like a gel - it got stiff, like you could break it into
pieces. So it leads me to believe it was not urine becuase it doesn't harden
like that. Thank you for your help! It is very confusing to me.
AnswerHi Elizabeth
Your hamster is a real mystery! With regard to his eye - you might want to bathe it with warm water. If he does keep scratching, then you might want to get it checked out in case it is conjunctivitis.
I'm afraid I've not come up with any suggestions regarding the white discharge.
