QuestionHi. My female dwarf hamster had seven babies about three weeks ago. I removed the dad then placed him back because he got lonely. Last night while feeding them I had a little surprise waiting. Six MORE little babies. I removed the older ones and let the dad stay there overnight (to help with the stress of the first night). I removed him this morning. But I don't want Poncho (the female) to have yo raise her babies all on her own. Is it okay to put an older daughter in to help her?
AnswerHello Vivianna,
Actually, mother hamsters do a lot better raising pups on their own that humans. Putting an older pup to help her might actually stress her out; stress can cause a mother hamster to cannibalize her young. Once the pups are old enough, remove them from the cage and do not put the male back into her cage.
