Question
QUESTION: Hi, Shawntiah. My dwarf hamster had a bladder infection and she just finished up her antibiotics this morning. Last night I noticed what I think is aspergillus fungus on her bedding in the area she urinates. I change her bedding pretty often and of course changed the bedding and used an antifungal disinfectant after I saw this. I haven't noticed any of the symptoms that go along with infection. What I was wondering is if I still need to take her to the vet for more antibiotics? Thank you!!

ANSWER: Hmmm, what type of bedding are you using because I remember when I used aspen I got a lot of fungus where my hamster used as the bathroom so I used carefresh or soft-sorbent bedding. I don't think the fungus has anything to do with the infection though.

QUESTION: I actually have always used Carefresh. Is it possible that humidity could cause the fungus? She was peeing more because of her bladder infection. I've never had to deal with this fungus before and I've heard that if the hamster does get infected from it that they can die fairly quickly. Should I get her treated for the fungus even if she isn't showing signs yet?

Answer
hmm.. the humidity can cause fungus to grow faster than normal and since she's peeing more that could certainly add to it. It is true fungus can kill especially if it's left in the cage for a while. I would call the vet first because maybe the vet could give you better insight on whether you should come in or not.
