Feeding mealworms to dwarf hamsters

Question
Hi I have two female dwarf hamsters and I was wondering if feeding them mealworms was really a good idea. I had read that it was good so since a couple days ago I've been feeding them one live mealworm each per day but is this too often or could they even be fed more? Do you think it would be better to give them crickets or some cooked meat instead? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Lily

I've never fed any of my hamsters with mealworms - mainly because I couldn't stand the thought of it (I'm a vegetarian!).  In the wild, of course, they would eat tiny insects.  These should only be given occasionally, so one a day is enough - not heard of people giving them crickets so I can't comment on this.  Chicken, fish or lamb are also fine for hamsters. Try to vary their diet as much as possible so that they get a good nutritional balance.  Include seeds and fresh vegetables in their diet.  You can also give them tiny amounts of cheese or hard boiled egg as a treat.
