happy kit or mad kit

Question
I just got a baby ferret named lola, she's 100% crazy and when I play with her I can't tell if shes mad or just excited. We play games with her on my bed like I'll toss her onto my balled up comforter or let her attack my hands, I also have a little puppet that i slide accross the bed and let her attack at it, and it seems like she is having fun. After awhile she kinda huntches her back jumps and runs and around. And this morning we were playing the same kinda games and her tail got puffy and the skin underneath seemed kinda red, she never hissed at me or tried backing into a corner she just ran around jumping and burrowing into the blankets. I got worried and put her back in her cage and she seemed kinda upset and was just staring and me and I noticed she was breathing kinda hard, she then went on to play with her toys in her cage by herself. All the ferret stuff I'v read about there seems to be a thin line between how a mad ferret acts and a excited ferret acts. Is my ferret excited from all the playing or is she mad?

Answer
She really seems just excited.  If a ferret gets mad you would see hissing and the play biting would turn into real biting.  Just keep in mind that she is young - so she will be awake and playful more now than as she gets older.  When she is done playing with you she will probably try to get away from you by exploring other places or heading back home.  Watch that she doesn't overheat (maybe the red skin color) when playing - make sure she gets plenty of water if she wants it.  For the future - watch her biting you as she need to learn not to bite hard.  You need to desice what is acceptable biting behavior keeping in mind she can't tell the difference between playbiting you and biting someone else.  I would suggest not letting her bite - you can scream when she makes contact or stop play for a short time so she realizes that she needs to learn to play without teeth!
