Question

My litte guy Logan
My dad brought some food for my ferret but got the wrong kind. I was going to wait to get him the right kind because i changed his food 3 times already. I didnt have a choice but to give him the food because its been about a day and half since he last had food. I didnt want him to go yet another day without food. Since then, iv noticed that his stools are not what they are suppose to be. They are loose and slimy. Its been like that for about 2 or 3 weeks now and im starting to get worried. Im wondering if that is normal or if he might be sick. Hes about 2 years old and has been skinner then other ferrets since i got him about 1 1/2 ago.

Answer
Hello Bethany and Logan,

With food changes, you're going to see some "undesirable" poops. They are going to be loose and icky because the ferret is used to his food and if you change his food, it upsets his stomach, which is just like with us. Sometimes if we eat something that we aren't used to, its going to make our tummies upset. Same with ferrets. Not to mention, they imprint on the smell of their food, so when they smell other food, it doesn't smell like food to them. That is why you might be seeing some reluctance to eat and things like that. You should go out and get him the food he's used to as soon as you can and don't change it and he should start perking right up. If he doesn't, then they're might be something else going on and you're going to need to see a vet as soon as you can!

I hope this helps, and if you have further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
