Ferret potty training

Question
Hello Cassie,

My name is Cole and I recently obtained a ferret. Her name is Fuzzy, she is about 4 months old. I have a question about potty training. I set up a litter box in her cage, cage(34 by 26 by 16, or something like that) and she was using it just fine, I was using newspaper at the time because I was unable to get a liter material until now. The problem is that now that I changed her litter material she will not use the litter box but rather another corner. What should I do? I went to the pet store that I got her from and noticed that the bedding that the pet store used was the same litter material I bought, could that be the problem? Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Cole

Answer
Yes ferrets can be very picky when it comes to things like that and take awhile to get used to change. I had the same issue out of all of my ferrets they were used to one type of litter but not mine so they refused to use it.

This was my solution that someone taught me. If her cage has levels take them all out so she is just on the bottom of the cage. Cover the whole bottom with a blanket or old tshirt or towel. Use a high back rectangular litterbox or a small cat litter box (no triangle boxes). Put the litterbox in the corner she is using. Put a lock on food bowl in one corner, lock on water bowl or heavy crock in the other and a bed in the last corner. Do not give her any corners to use except the one with the litterbox. Once she is using the litterbox regularly slowly start adding levels and hammocks back to her cage.

She will eventually get used to the new litter.

Good luck!
