rabie shots for ferrets

Question
Hello,
I have several ferrets & have had them from 5yrs to the last one I got 4 month ago. All of them ( except the baby she's only 10 month now) have had their yearly rabie and distemper shot, (the baby has only had her distemper so far)My question is I know how important a distemper shot is but with my older furballs would it be o.kay to stop getting the rabie shot each one has had the rabie shot for 4 to 5 years. If it's that important I will keep getting the rabie shot if it for the best but sometimes I hear that we are over vaccinating our babies. They do get yearly check up also. I do have a very good ferret vet.
                                                   Thank you Mary

Answer
Hi Mary:

I've heard similar and truthfully, I don't give my kids over 5 years rabies shots either, but ultimately it would probably be best to ask your vet. I would feel terrible telling you this if something happened to one of your kids. It's distemper that is so horribly contagious and more commonly spread even on our shoes if we cross a path they have crossed over.  I think there is a point where these injections can build up and each year it becomes more and more likely ferrets have an allergic reaction to the shots - it's usually the older ones who get reactions, not the young ones who are getting their first shots.

(did I dodge that bullet cleverly enough? LOL) Best to check with your vet just to be sure.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
