Ferret Refuses Normal Ferret Food

Question
My Baby was diagnosed with insulnoma in November...she was almost dead...really scary...$1800 later and one happy vet clinic later, she is just fine. She Needs Meds 2 times a day, and she usually has a good appetite. My first question is about a Ferrets Appetite...1) Is it common for a ferret to favor one food, then all the sudden, not like it any more. The reason I ask is that for years, Baby would not eat traditional ferret food...she preferred Iams cat food...dry...ever since she was sick, I started feeding her CARNIVORE CARE...now, the lil princess won't eat anything but Carnivore Care....and at $13.00 a pouch...it only lasts a week....so 4 times a month...once a week....a drive 20 miles out of my way to buy her this food because I have seen her turn her nose up at her other food for almost 2 days, I even tried feeding her chicken...VERY bad idea..I got the scars to prove it...her food choice is now very limited because of her condition...this seems to work...2)Do you know where I may be able to find Carnivore Care in BULK??? WHOLESALE??? At least CHEAPER? Other than her fickle eating Habits, she is a very normal, active Ferret....Thanks:)

Answer
Hi Lacy:

It sounds like you've been giving Baby excellent care - Carnivore Care is an excellent food for them when they are not well.  It is not at all unusual for them to 'imprint' on one food and not want another food.   There are several ways to get them back onto the food you want to get her onto.

You can grind up the kibble you *want* to change her back over to and mix it with the Carnivore Care - just a little bit at first, then slowly increase the amount of kibble and lessen the amount of Carnivore Care....then at least you have her onto 'kibble soup' and you can then start lessening the amount of water little at a time until she is back to dry kibble.

Ferrets just don't do change well, of any kind.  They would always rather keep things as they are used to, so we have to make any changes very little at a time.  I really believe if you do this, you will find that she can and will go back to eating her regular kibble - it just may take a month or so while you change her over slowly.

Hope that helps!  Let me know if I can be of further help.

Sincerely,
Jacquie Rodgers
