What kind of ferret to intorduce

Question
I had two hobs Merlin and Odin both 8 months.  Due to complications with an operation Merlin passed away yesterday.  I would like to get a new companion for Odin but i'm not sure whether to get one or two, what gender to choose (he's been done), or whether to get very young ferrets from a breeder or older ferrets from a sanctuary.  Odin doesn't seem to have reacted to Merlin's absence yet so i'm also unsure whether to do this sooner or later.  I was hoping for a bit of advice.
Many thanks, Abbie

Answer
Hi Abbie:

First, so sorry about your loss. I'm glad you're considering another ferret and hope you'll do it before Odin does have symptoms. Sometimes they stop eating, playing or can otherwise be affected. Two ferrets are always happier than one. Male or female, it won't make a difference as long as they are spayed/neutered also.

At eight months, Odin is considered an adult ferret. You could easily put him with a similarly aged ferret, a younger aged ferret or even an older ferret - just be sure the ferret's activity level is similar - say,  kit up to age 1-1/2 or so. I always think getting them from a rescue is the best idea because you are giving a home to a ferret who wouldn't have one otherwise. The shelter operator also knows the temperaments of the ferrets and can help select one that will be a good playmate for Odin. Take Odin with you when you choose a playmate - that's imperative! He must have a chance to pick his buddy. Some ferrets automatically will be  buddies and others will just never get along no matter what you do, so be sure he's included in the selection procession and good luck!

Sincerely,
