What is wrong with her?Tiffany and Bandit

Answer
Hello Tiffany,

It is good that you bright her to a vet right away.  It is always better to be safe and have a professional take a peek.

An increase in weight can be caused by many things, but since her health checked out fine, it is probably a natural occurrence.  Some ferrets fatten up in the winter months and slim down in the summer.  At times this can be a drastic change.  My big boy gains and looses up to a pound! This cycle repeats every year so I've come to expect it.  Other ferrets maintain a consistency weight year round.  It is not clear why this occurs in some ferrets but not others.

The best idea is to keep a close eye on Bandit and monitor her for any behavioral changes.  Make sure she is acting normally, and maintaining her usual energy level.  Do not try to put her on a diet.  Ferrets need to eat every 4-6 hours  to stay healthy due to their high metabolism.  They cannot adjust to eating one or two meals a day.  Always keep food and fresh water available.

If you notice any odd behavior or she stops eating, bring her back to your vet for a check up right away.  It could be an indication that something is wrong.
