What is wrong with my ferret?

21 10:42:31

Question
Our ferret suddenly became very lethargic, would not eat or drink and has not gone to the bathroom in two days. We took her to the vet and gave her an x-ray but nothing came up. In my gut I felt like she had ingested something toxic that was just making it's way through her system and the vet could not offer us any help whatsoever. We bought her pedialite because she is very dehydrated and came home to discover she had vomited everywhere. Could she have possibly vomited all the contents of her little stomach up and dehydrated herself? Please help! She is very ill and is just laying around and looks like she is half alive, but is breathing.

Answer
Hello Brittany,

Your ferret is very sick and needs to see a vet ASAP. I am certain she is very dehydrated and needs immediate IV fluids and medication.

A ferret that has not eaten or defecated in two days is a dire situation.  They to eat and defecate every 4-6 hours due to their high metabolism.  I cannot say what is causing the problem, but a veterinarian knowledgeable with ferrets should hospitalize her immediately and preform further diagnostics.

Below is a list of ferret-friendly veterinarians in Canada.  Please seek a second opinion as soon as possible.  Also consider the nearest school of veterinary medicine, since there are often specialists on call.
