Introducing a jill to a house with two hobs.

Question
Hi,
I have kept ferrets for 12 years, but this is the first time I have had an entire hob. At the moment I have a 6 year old castrated male and a 1 year old entire male. I would like to use the latter for breeding next spring and was thinking about getting a jill. Both hobs are very placid, and I have never seen any hostility between them. The castrated male is very sociable, and has lived with other jills in the past. My question is; if I acquired a jill this winter will the entire hob pester her when she is not in season? Would it be possible to keep them together outside of the breeding season? Obviously they will be separated after mating while she raises the young and both animals will also be neutered after breeding. A final question; is it likely that the pair will live happily together after producing a litter and being sterilized?

Answer
Hi

It is possible for the whole hob to pester the jill even when not in season. Some will not but some will constantly it completely depends on the ferret. I have always kept hobs and jills separated to prevent incident.

Once spay/neutered and healed the ferrets should have no issues getting along once introduced. I have had some who have mated and were immediately integrated into the same cage after being fixed with no issues. And then I have had some that we had to go through the entire introduction process over.
