dog potty problem

Question
Dear Kim, we have a 2yrs old,15 pound female Boston Terrier. We bought her when she was about 4 months old. and trained her to pee pee pads. She caught on quickly and did just great. We thought all along that she would be like the dog  we had before her. A 15LB  male Yorkie and Poodle mixed breed that we had for 15 yrs but had to put down a few months before getting her. We live on a Golf Course and all the properties have large lots.and all our neighbors have dogs and cats. when they needed to potty we just opened the door and let them out,in a few minutes they would return, everyone knew the others pets and we had no problems. But as she (Princess)grew out of the puppy stage we took her out on a leash to potty. This worked ok except my wife and I are getting up in years and I have a disability problem. I'm retired but my wife still works but will also retire soon.It became almost impossible for me or her to take Princess out to potty,it was always to cold to hot, snowing, raining,to late or to early, you get the pcture. So we tried just letting her out but found out there was a lot of differance between a Boston Terrier and a mixed yorkie poo. She would run away everytime we  tried this, we could go in the yard with her and try to get her to stay, but to no avail. She is impossible to catch. So for the last year and half we are back to the pee pads, which has gotten to be quit a mess, sometimes she does great and hits the pads everytime, but about half the time being a girl dog (her plumbing is in the rear) she doesn't get up on the pad far enough and what a mess we have to clean up, we use large (23X36 inch) pads and use 2 at a time but she still does the same thing. She takes 15mg of phenobarb (for seizures) twice a day and 1 5mg prednisone every other day (for allergies).I don't know if these medications would make her do this or not. As you know Boston Terriers can become very sick if subjected to hot  or cold weather. I've looked at every potty device on the market haven't seen anything that might be better for us than the pads. Maby you can figure it out. Thank you so very much. Bobby

Answer
Hello, Bobby!  Since you live on a golf course, I'm assuming a traditional fence is out of the question.  So, I wonder if you have considered a wireless electric dog fence?  These can be very effective to keep your dog within a designated area.  Most Boston Terriers are quick learners, so Princess would probably do great with this option.  Most alternative indoor potty solutions wouldn't solve Princess' issue of tinkling outside the borders, so one other suggestion would be to create a barrier just taller than Princess surrounding the pee pads so that her hind end has to be over the pad to use it.  You can see some wireless fences here -  http://www.pet-super-store.com/pet-supplies/electric-dog-fences/  Good luck!
