barking and growling when people come to our house

Question
We have adopted a female terrier/shitsu mix (neutered)about 1 yr old. We've had her shortly over 2 weeks now and she is doing wonderfully in most areas but here are 2 problems we need help with.  In our prescence she is calm, loving, good natured. When we have visitors in our home (her domain) she barks and growls (no biting) and does not warm up to them. She allows them to pet her and give her treats but resumes the growling.  Help!! Additionally, when we take her for walks she resists leaving our property and doesn't want to go for a walk. When we take her to a park and walk she is fine. Any help or hints you can give us is appreciated.  Thanks, Sandy

Answer
She may just be a bit fearful or unsure in certain situations.  It can take a month or more before a dog feels truly comfortable in a new home.  If she resists leaving the property, try luring her with a treat (make it something really good, such as a tiny piece of liverwurst or turkey).  If she is unable to eat a high value treat, you can bet she's anxious, so have patience.  Even a step at a time is fine.  One of the best ways to communicate with a new dog is to take her to a training class.  Even if she knows some commands already, it will strengthen the bond between you.  As to the growling, try to have people toss treats to her onto the floor, rather than getting in to her personal space.  Allow the dog to make the first overture, and don't have people reach out their hands toward her, or over her head.  If she comes over to anyone, have them hold a treat in their hand at their side for her to come and take.  If she doesn't, no big deal, just drop it on the floor where she can get it if she takes a step forward.  All you are doing at this point is changing the association she makes with people.  If people become a predictor of treats and no scary moves, she may warm up to them eventually.
